"...do what you feel."
If you haven't heard of the SICK STAR brand yet, you soon will! These guys have got some Fly gear and are makin' moves! With there first Full collection behind them (shown to the left), they are movin' on to Winter 2010 so be sure to keep an eye out.
When recently given the opportunity to ask the Creative Director, and Founder of SICK STAR, Eugene Recto a few questions this is what he had to say...
How old is the SICK STAR brand?
SS: We're still young. Only about 2 years into the game. It has taken us on a wild journey since the beginning though that seems a lot longer.
Where did SICK STAR get it's start? ...How did the brand come about?
SS: SICK STAR started in the pursuit of passion, hence our mantra, "Do what you feel." I've wanted to do art and design as a living ever since I was young. After college I got a job and was on the 9-5 grind, sitting in a cubicle and making some really good money at the time but the quality of life wasn't there. I decided to quit my job cold turkey and put all my resources into making shirts, but more importantly, into living a life I dreamt about. I had no experience in the industry so it has all been a learning curve.
"Besides clothing, SICK STAR is people and opportunity."
Your website states that "the meanings of the SICK STAR name and its images lie in the perspective of each viewer." ...What does the SICK STAR name/brand mean to you or your team personally? If you had to sum it up in just a few words?
SS: Besides clothing, SICK STAR is people and opportunity. It is the collaboration of our friends and friends-of-friends coming together to push one product and, on the other end, having a platform and network of support to push each individual's career. We consider them more than friends because they allow us to do what we feel and vice versa. We call these people the SICKS Degrees Family. In other words, SICK STAR is Family.
You also say that, "Like a popular song, one image might have a certain connotation to one viewer yet might invoke completely opposite emotions in another due to his/her own culture and upbringing." ...Is there cultural relevance that it seems that a lot of your models are Asian? If so, could you tell us more.
SS: It just so happened that most of the models we used recently look predominantly Asian. In addition to Digital Arts, I studied Anthropology in school so SICK STAR was made colorblind. The SICKS Degrees Family come from different walks of life and many actually of mixed blood. Our current models, Sudana is Cambodian/Chinese/Thai/French and Tracy Nova is Filipina/Caucasian. It doesn't matter the color of one's skin. We are down to work with anyone that's down for us. In the words of Wonder Mike, "to the black, to the white, the red and the brown, the purple and yellow."
As a whole, the inspiration behind the SICK STAR brand is said to be formed through your travels around the world, various places you’ve called “home”, favorite songs and the individuals you've met along the way ...how about the Fall 2010 Collection? There are some pretty hot pieces in the collection, what is the inspiration behind this collection in particular?
SS: Fall was based on music as it is a common connection between us all. Music defines cultures and we had to represent who we were as a brand for our first full collection. A lot of our Family are in the nightlife industry in Las Vegas to Los Angeles and beyond so it seemed only fitting to base the line on music. Pieces from our Winter collection are slowly dropping so be on the lookout for it! We also have some surprises in the mix so stay tuned.
