Okay, so Pink Friday has officially come and gone and many of you have probably already went out and picked up or downloaded Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday album. But for those of you who haven't picked it up yet for one reason or another, and especially those of you who are hesitant, but curious... this review is for you.
I'd like to start out by saying that I personally am not familiar with Nicki's career as a mixtape artist (although I wish I were!) ...so this review is based solely on the Pink Friday album and what I know of Nicki Minaj the artist, from 2009 on.
First impression: My first impression was not exactly what I was expecting or even hoping for. Being a big fan of Nicki's witty rap/cypher style I was expecting/hoping for a lot more of that style than what I felt there was.
Second impression: After I got over the fact that there isn't as much witty rap as I personally would have liked, I really started to like what was there. Featuring collaborations with a range of artists from Eminem, Drake, and Kanye West to Will.I.Am, Rihanna, and Natasha Bedingfield, it really is a blend of sorts and I love it!
“If it's good music, people don't care whether it's pop or hip-hop or R&B. Before I was a rapper; now I'm a song maker.” Nicki Minaj - Ebony Magazine Dec/Jan 2011
What you can expect: If you're lookin' for a rap album you will be disappointed. But if you are a fan of not only Nicki's rap style, but songs like her recent chart topper Your Love, then you will love it.
Top picks: This is definitely an album you can put in and play right through, so picking the top songs will probably vary greatly depending on who you ask. That being said, my fav's are Your Love (of course!), Dear Old Nicki (heart hitting, and personal), Here I Am, Save Me, I'm the Best, and Fly (feat. Rihanna) ...I think? I like 'em all!
Roman's Revenge (feat. Eminem), and Did It On 'Em: Killer beats, with crazy Nicki flow, and lyrically the most intense songs on the record ...raw Nicki. In a recent MTV special Nicki explains the personality behind Roman (of Roman's Revenge)... “Roman is a crazy boy who lives in me, and he says the things that I don't want to say. He was born just a few months ago. I think he was born out of rage, he was conceived in rage. So he bashes everyone, he threatens to beat people... he's violent. ...I ask him to leave, but he can't, he's here for a reason. People have brought him out, people have conjured him up now he won't leave.”
Hopes for the next one: Cause yeah, I'm already lookin' forward to a next one!
For the next one though I personally would love to hear more like Roman's Revenge and Did It On 'Em (sound and flow wise), but a little less raw lyrically. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE real music, which these two songs most definitely are, but lyrics like, “If I had a d*** I'd pull it out and **** on 'em.” (from Did It On 'Em), especially coming from a girl ...it's just not me.
Overall Rating: 4 Stars! ...only because I still would have loved to hear more rap.
